How to Fill a Nikah Nama Correctly

The Nikah Nama is completed by the Nikah Khawan or registrar at the ceremony — but what goes into it is decided by you. This guide explains how each important entry should be approached, so the contract you sign is the contract you intended.

How to fill a Nikah Nama correctly — guidance for Pakistani couples

Quick Answer

Approach the Nikah Nama in this order: verify identity particulars against the CNICs, agree and record the Haq Mehr (prompt and deferred), decide any special conditions, consider the delegated-divorce column deliberately, confirm witness details, and only then sign. Errors registered now are expensive to correct later.

Before the Ceremony: Agree the Substance

The signing table is the wrong place to negotiate. Agree the mehr amount and its prompt/deferred split, discuss any conditions either party wants recorded, and decide your position on the delegated-divorce column — all before the ceremony. Bring the CNICs of both parties and both witnesses so particulars are copied exactly.

Identity Particulars

Names, parentage, dates of birth and CNIC numbers must match the identity documents exactly — including spelling. These particulars flow into the Union Council register and the MRC, and a mismatch can surface years later in a visa refusal or inheritance dispute. Read them aloud against the CNICs before signing.

The Haq Mehr Entries

Record the total mehr, the prompt (mu'ajjal) portion payable on demand, and the deferred (mu'wajjal) portion payable on dissolution or death. If property is given in lieu of mehr, describe it precisely. Vague entries — "as agreed" or blank portions — invite dispute; precise entries protect both parties.

Conditions and the Delegated-Divorce Column

Record any agreed conditions in clear, lawful, specific wording. Then consider the Talaq-e-Tafweez column deliberately: whether the husband delegates a right of divorce to the wife, and on what conditions. These columns are often struck through without discussion — decide consciously instead.

Witnesses, Signatures and the Registrar's Seal

The two adult Muslim witnesses sign with their particulars recorded from their CNICs. The couple sign every copy. The Nikah Registrar signs and seals the form and is responsible for submitting it to the Union Council. Confirm the registrar's licence — an unlicensed solemnisation creates registration problems later.
