Nikah Nama vs Marriage Certificate (MRC) vs FRC
Three documents dominate Pakistani marriage paperwork: the Nikah Nama, the computerised Marriage Registration Certificate (MRC), and NADRA's Family Registration Certificate (FRC). They are not interchangeable — this guide explains what each one is and when you need it.

Quick Answer
The Nikah Nama is the marriage contract signed at the ceremony. The MRC is the computerised certificate issued afterwards by the local authority from NADRA-linked records. The FRC is a separate NADRA document listing family composition. Embassies usually want the MRC with translation and attestation — sometimes alongside the others.
The Three Documents Side by Side
| Document | What It Is | Issued By | Main Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nikah Nama | The marriage contract signed at the ceremony | Nikah Registrar; registered with Union Council | Primary legal evidence of the marriage contract and its terms |
| MRC | Computerised Marriage Registration Certificate | Local authority, from NADRA-linked records | Standard proof of marriage for embassies, passports, banks |
| FRC | Family Registration Certificate | NADRA | Family composition evidence for some immigration files |
Which Document Do You Need?
For most official purposes — visas, passports, banking — the MRC is the working document, backed by the Nikah Nama as the underlying contract. Immigration authorities sometimes ask for the FRC as well, to evidence family composition. For use abroad, the MRC and Nikah Nama normally travel with certified English translation and MoFA attestation. When in doubt, obtain all three: they answer different questions.
Keeping the Three Consistent
The Nikah Nama feeds the register, the register feeds the MRC, and NADRA records feed the FRC — so an error at the start propagates through all three. Check each document against the others the moment it is issued, and correct discrepancies at the source. Our correction guides explain the routes for the Nikah Nama and the MRC.
