Marriage Registration in Pakistan

Marriage registration in Pakistan is the legal step that makes a marriage officially recognised: the Nikah Nama is entered in the Union Council register under the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961, and the computerised Marriage Registration Certificate (MRC) is issued from NADRA-linked records on the basis of that entry.

Marriage registration in Pakistan — Union Council register and computerised MRC

Quick Answer

Every marriage solemnised in Pakistan must be registered with the Union Council under the MFLO 1961. The registrar submits the Nikah Nama, the marriage is entered in the official register, and the local authority then issues the computerised MRC — the certificate embassies, banks and government departments ask for.

The Legal Duty to Register

Registration is not optional. The Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961 requires every marriage solemnised in Pakistan to be registered, and makes the Nikah Registrar responsible for reporting it. An unregistered marriage creates serious practical problems — no MRC, and difficulty with passports, visas, inheritance and children's documentation — quite apart from being a contravention.

The Registration Process

  • The nikah is solemnised and the Nikah Nama completed and signed
  • The Nikah Registrar submits the Nikah Nama to the competent Union Council
  • The marriage is entered in the official register
  • The local authority issues the computerised MRC from NADRA-linked records
  • Certified copies are obtained, and attestation arranged where the documents will be used abroad

The MRC and What It Is Used For

The computerised Marriage Registration Certificate — commonly called the NADRA marriage certificate — is the document asked for by foreign embassies and immigration authorities, passport offices, banks, property authorities and courts. It is issued by the competent local authority from NADRA-linked records; no private company issues it. Check every particular against the Nikah Nama the moment it is issued.

Late Registration of an Existing Marriage

Many marriages — particularly older or informal ones — were never registered. Late registration is possible but more involved: the record must be established to the local authority's satisfaction, and practice varies by district. If your marriage was never registered, regularise it now rather than when a visa or inheritance depends on it.

Registration for Overseas Pakistanis

A marriage conducted remotely — by video link with wakeel representation — is registered in exactly the same way as any other. The MRC is then couriered internationally with tracking, with MoFA attestation, certified translation and embassy legalisation arranged where the destination country requires them.
